I really liked the concept of this story...an alien apocalypse decimates the Earth's population and the remaining humans mostly become scavengers or join vicious gangs. Our protagonist (aliased Abel) goes on a quest to find her missing "sister" (a young girl who, along with her mother, had been Abel's traveling companions). However, I felt that something was off with the pacing of the story. A few days would pass in the book, but the characters' relationships/interactions accelerated at such a rate to indicate that months had passed. I felt as though the storyline could have been fleshed out more to allow for more natural development of the characters. There was no indication that this would be a book series, so I was taken aback by the ending. I think this book should have been a fully fleshed out novel, rather than a story with a cliffhanger. The book could use some editing (one place I noticed an entire word missing from a sentence) and in some places, the language/dialog seemed simplistic to me, but all-in-all, this was a good first effort by the author.

Population eBook Elizabeth Stephens Reviews
Written as a "cliff hanger" serial, with the main character in jeopardy as the book ends. Fine if you want to continue the series-irritating if you don't.
I was really blown away by the book, it's like walking dead and war of the worlds had a baby. If you like action adventure, you'll like this!
This book was just what I needed. Perfect mix of strong (kick ass) heroine, romance, and suspense. And I love that the heroine is a person of color. Best apocalypse story I've come across. It was so worth the day I played hookie from work to finish this book.
I don't read a lot of science fiction but I devoured Population. The author couldn't have described it better when she called it "a science fiction/post-apocalyptic, gorey, romantic adventure-fest." This is a great book that will leave you wanting more.
I couldn't finish it. The writing is very good. But I just wasn't ready or interested in a dystopian Beauty and the Beast type romance novel. I just couldn't handle one more page of reading about Abel and her yearning for Kane's sweaty, glowing, powerful chest or her feelings of confusion seeing him in silk pants and nothing else. When you strip away the dystopian future and the alien race taking over the world, it's just basically a Beauty and the Beast Harlequin romance novel.
Situated somewhere between Hunger Games and Twilight, Stephens' "Population" soars as a result of meticulous character development and eerie atmosphere. In an exciting roller coaster ride, this new young author swiftly switches pace from action to romance (and vice versa) and explores social themes like class and oppression in young adult language. The first novel in this genre to include a multi-ethnic female main character.
I thought the overall story idea and characters were compelling. I particularly liked it that the main character was a women of color, something we need far more of in mainstream literature. I found it a delightful read and I found myself staying up way to late to read "just a bit" more. I am looking forward to the sequel. As another commentator pointed out, I struggled a bit with the pacing and how quickly the lead characters fall for each other especially given the hatred between the two species. As well I struggled with some of the dialogue and excessive profanity (though I have nothing against in principle) which seemed overly forced.
