A good book, but one of my least favorites in the series. The first third of the book was a difficult read. The dialogue seemed disjointed at times and the prose difficult to get through. It didn't flow naturally. For example, the various meetings that Geary has with the politicians that accompanied his team to Earth had dialogue that seemed stilted and repetitive, and frankly didn't add too much to what we already knew about the politicians of the Alliance.

Once Campbell found himself dealing with matters that needed fixing by Geary, whether it was combat or personal interaction, the book picked up. Geary grows as a leader, using his ideals and conduct that seems "old fashioned" persuade people to take the "right" action, rather than the self-interested action. There's a bit of cartoonish general in the book that embodies the worst of the career bureaucrat that Geary neutralizes nicely.

One complaint I have about the book - it felt a bit like filler in the series. We've been told that there are forces in the Alliance that are being built to confront Geary and keep his influence in check, and that there is a leader waiting in the background to lead those forces. We don't see any of this in the book until nearly the end. The entire book is a bit of a set-up to perhaps a significant confrontation in the next book. While the story developed the main character, it felt a bit of letdown for the real showdown to be put off to at least the next volume.

One theme from the book that was clear was the author's message that a government keeping secrets against it's citizens is a government that is rotting from within. This point was hammered by Campbell so many times you have to wonder if he is making a statement about our current state of affairs. It's a theme he plays on greatly...too many secrets for the wrong reasons leading to disaster.
So far I have really enjoyed all the lost fleet books, but as the books continue I am starting to find the overall story to be unacceptable. Admiral Geary is supposed to be a legend, a national Treasure, the people love him, but the government hates him? Seems to be in a realistic universe, the majority of politicians would be kissing his ass, riding his coat tails if they could. Of course some would hate him, as in the book, but practically all of them? Even to the point of trying to get him killed, repeatedly? I ain't buying it. With the population hanging on his every word, all he would need to do is even hint that such senators existed, and any that he named would be turned out on their asses. Yet instead in this story, a supposedly brilliant commander just falls into one trap after that were put in place by members of his own government. And what about the Fleet headquarters? Everyone including the admiral realizes they are out to kill him as well, and what does he do about that? the man that is the hero of the alliance, the supposedly most powerful man in the universe? He does nothing, he simply ignores the threats, the looming civil war, and dutifully takes orders, even though he realizes that those orders come directly from those who wish to see him fail, or worse yet, dead.

Sorry but the story is falling apart, because no one, regardless of how honorable would allow themselves to be toyed with repeatedly, especially when their own lives were at stake, not to mention their nation, and especially when that person had more than enough power to do something about it.
I was hooked on the series when I started #1 Dauntless in the Lost Fleet series followed thru to #6 then picked up the story with the spin off Lost Stars 1-4 I really liked it and also the Lost Fleet Beyond the Frontier book 1-5 of advertised 6 I enjoyed the series but now have been waiting 3 years for book #6 telling what happens after the battle at Alternate Unity when they were supposedly going to Unity with the evidence to try and fix the government and help the alliance survive. instead I see the story of Michael Geary in the syndic home system I the book #1 of the Lost Fleet Corsair series and guess what you can't enlarge the print because of pictures for those of use that need large print WE JUST GOT SCREWED and of course no refunds for not being able to read the books and on top of that instead of a book #6 to end the Lost Fleet Beyond the Frontier we get books #1&2 of the Genesis series to go back to the first Geary that starts a tradition of going above and beyond expectations in the service of the people he is entrusted with protecting, HOW ABOUT ACTUALLY FINISHING THE "LOST FLEET BEYOND THE FRONTIER" some of us have been waiting for 3 years for the final book I bought #5 Leviathan on March 5, 2015 it is as of now Aug. 6, 2018 I would like to see book 6 before I die of old age thank you very much I will not spend another dime on your books because apparently you can't finish a series as advertised I might as well take the car to the car wash and bring it back after shampoo no rinse I would get the same feeling of satisfaction
if you didn't want to do 6 why didn't you just stop with Geary escorting the dancer back to midway checking on how they were doing to going back home and calling it a day. a 4 book series stopping there would have been better then a promised 6 book series that leaves you hanging at 6 with no conclusion
