Running On Empty An LCR Elite Novel edition by Christy Reece Literature Fiction eBooks

I probably read four or five novels in this genre per week; this is one of the finest I've encountered in quite awhile. The characters are highly relatable and beautifully drawn. The suspense is taut-no giving away the bad guy until the final pages. And the romance is hauntingly realistic. My first novel by this author is far from my last: I'm filling my wish list with her other work. If you enjoy well written romantic suspense, this is a book for you.

Running On Empty An LCR Elite Novel edition by Christy Reece Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

First of all I have to be honest and say how much I love Christy Reece. She is one of the very few authors where every book has been a 5* read for me. I love Romantic Suspense and the grittier the better.

I have been looking forward to this new LCR spin off and it didn't disappoint. Declan and Sabrina were perfect for each other, and as usual nothing was held back with regards to the dark side of the story and neither were exempt from pain. I think for me, that's part of what works so well. All the characters have been brutalised in some way and all have over come and come through. They aren't perfect. They often times aren't nice, but they are always characters that you will fall in love with and want to back them 100%.

I'm not going to go into the plot, other than it's LCR on steroids and if you love the original series, you will love this even more. This was the perfect start to LCR Elite. (And yes, Cole and Noah both make appearances). I will say that I can't wait to see more of Riley (there is so a story there) and Justin as well as Aiden.
This is one of the BEST Reece books yet. I love her LCR series, but this is a standout favorite of the series.

SYNOPSIS NO SPOILERS
Secret Agents marry. The wife leave the secret ops world, and joins LCR in order to save people, and her sanity in the process. Hubby gets snatched. The bad guys set it up to look like he was killed. He is tortured, and about a year later rescued. He has been brainwashed to believe his wife set up his kidnaping. Fueled by a need for revenge, hubby kidnaps his own wife and threatens her life. She is overjoyed and astonished to find out he is alive, BUT disillusioned and heartbroken to know he hates her and blames her for his months of torture.

The rest of the book is about hunting down the evil people, and the married secret agents sparring and slowly reconciling. The man says he’s just a shell of a man, and claims he’s ‘running on empty’ (the title), and has nothing left for her. The woman is stubborn and continues to focus her love on a spouse that despises her and wishes her dead.

WHAT I LIKE
This is a fast paced suspense romance that doesn’t slack off. It doesn’t have much of gooey, relationship stuff without some bullets flying, so I’d give it 10 stars if I could.

I like the characters. Good and bad, emotional, hurting, honorable, they have all the ‘right stuff’.

The best part is that this is part of a series. If you haven’t read the LCR series yet, you will LOVE them. They can all be read as a stand alone, or even out of order.

I MET THE AUTHOR
I met the author at Lori Foster’s Reader Get Together a year or two ago. She is AMAZING! This is this little unpretentious gal that looks like she is a school teacher She was so humble and kind. I was bowled over in amazement that one of my favorite authors was waiting in line next to me to meet some other big authors. Needless to say, I got her autograph and probably made a fool out of myself bumbling around, humiliated that I didn’t have any of her books with me for her to sign. I have ALL of her books, but I didn’t see her name on the author list, so I didn’t bring any with me. This is one author that is a true artist. Her books are edgy, clever, original and entertaining, and I put them on my very limited coveted “To be Read Again” book shelf.
Declan and Sabrina went through a lot in their relationship. However, I just couldn't see the two of them together. I liked Sabrina but though Declan was not a very sympathetic character and I couldn't understand why she hung on when he kept telling her to go away. I get that he was tortured, but he was repeatedly proven wrong in his thoughts and still treated her badly. I thought their was more relationship potential with Adien and Sabrina than Declan and Sabrina. Partly because their previous relationship seemed almost to perfect. Not a lot of romance and I didn't like the hero, even at the end the author wasn't able to turn that around for me. I give it three stars because it does keep you engaged in the story because of the fast pace, but the characters didn't really seem like they should stay together.
Declan and Sabrina are both specially training black-ops warriors. They're secretly married to help protect their identities as they've made a lot of enemies over the years. My first complaint is this book is excessively long at 398 pages. I think a lot of this book could have been trimmed down to help keep focus and interest. I enjoyed that Sabrina was a force to be reckoned with, both physically and psychologically, however there were just so many cheesy references in this book. During her first missions, she slipped the bad guy some "sleeping powder." This just rubbed me wrong for some reason. For highly trained operatives, wouldn't they better describe it as a "powerful sedative" or something more, I don't know, "intelligent?" Declan confides to Sabrina that he's going to leave the agency after he finishes up his last mission, but when days turn to months, she realizes something is wrong. Yes, I loved the detail of the torture but can a human body, even highly trained, really withstand all that? It got monotonous when Declan returned and continually blew off Sabrina. She kind of became a doormat and lost some of her mojo as his continued rejections. I only stuck with this book because I had to find out who the traitor was and why, however that was seriously anticlimatic.
I probably read four or five novels in this genre per week; this is one of the finest I've encountered in quite awhile. The characters are highly relatable and beautifully drawn. The suspense is taut-no giving away the bad guy until the final pages. And the romance is hauntingly realistic. My first novel by this author is far from my last I'm filling my wish list with her other work. If you enjoy well written romantic suspense, this is a book for you.
