Summary: Changelings are dying from Goblin Fruit, and the Queen doesn't care. Not only that, but the Queen has decided she has had enough of Toby and has banished her. Toby is tired of the Queen of the Mist's nonsense. Time for a change...Review: Oh no, another excellent book from Seanan McGuire!! How can one person handle all these amazing books? Quite joyfully.
I love Toby's world, set in San Francisco, living right next to Faerie. Her world is already built, but we still got introduced to new types of characters, like the Cu Sidhe. They are fun! Toby's magic also expands, and she learns that much more about herself.
The plot is as exciting as usual, with Toby always getting close to running for her life. We see Toby stand up for herself to the queen, in a way that may have been unimaginable for her in the beginning of the series, but now, she's fed up with her. What I found most interesting, was the little hints made to Toby's history, especially relating to her mother and her aunt, the Luidaeg. In fact, at the end of the book we get a little short of a memory told from the Luidaeg's viewpoint of Amandine, and it was very telling. I can't tell you more without giving the plot away, but I'll say this: things are not always what they seem.
Our favorite characters have returned with all of their awesomeness. Tybalt, May, Quentin, Sylvester, all make appearances. Our not so favorite characters are there too, along with some new people. We finally meet Quentin's parents! (And my suspicions were correct on their identity).
Relationships are not the heavy focus in this novel, but now that Tybalt and Toby are dating, we see them enjoy the early stages of a relationship. Their love and loyalty to each other is as heartwarming as it is realistic. No teenage angst here, normal everyday adult emotions. Some strain appears in her relationship with Sylvester, and I wonder if that will get worse, or what it will mean for Toby in the future.
One of my issues, which actually isn't an issue yet, is the near death for Toby in every book. It is starting to feel a bit like the Final Destination movies, where we see new and creative ways for Toby to die, and it gets worse every book. I think it's still okay now, but I can see myself tiring of it in the future.
But as usual, Seanan McGuire produces a hit. I can't sing enough praises about this series, and if anyone loves the beautiful and cruel world of Faerie, this series is the series for you!

Chimes at Midnight Seanan McGuire 9780756408145 Books Reviews
I thought the previous book was a let down after a couple of strong books, so I was glad to see that the story in this one returns to the former quality.
I read this book a few years ago, so excuse if I don't go into much details, but I was glad to see an expansion in the political landscape and having Toby face-off against one of her worst enemies. Also the world expanded in this one.
In all we see Toby in her usual danger, nice characters surrounding her, and some good action. But some good reveals to keep things interesting, and more importantly, a book that actually progresses the story forward and will have great consequences in the future.
There's not much to say other than that. If you've read this far into the series as it is, might as well keep on going. But be glad to know that this one was a return to the quality of previous books that have kept the interest of readers coming back for more.
This was one gripping story.
Very fast paced and good action. My one complaint is that the good guys all fell for the same trick (siren song) multiple times. Toby even mentioned how to counter it, but nobody ever bothered to after it had been used against them once. That felt a bit like a case of "the main character has to do everything because nobody else will step up to show initiative," though I suppose it can be chalked up to the feudal mindset of Fae they really aren't got at showing initiative.
I have enjoyed Seanan McGuire’s OCTOBER DAYE urban fantasies, but a few of her more recent novels in the series seemed to introduce too many characters and bring too many different magic systems into play. However, the latest two novels, Chimes at Midnight and The Winter Long (which I’ll review soon), have knocked my socks off with tight plotting and memorable characters. Now I once again find myself impatient for the next one to arrive, and annoyed that the September 1 publication date is so far away.
In Chimes at Midnight, Toby is working with her team — her lover, Tybalt, the local King of Cats; May, Toby’s Fetch; Jasmine, May’s shapeshifting lover; Quentin, Toby’s squire; and Raj, Tybalt’s heir — to hunt for goblin fruit. Goblin fruit is no problem for pure-blooded fairies, but for changelings like Toby, it’s an addiction. More than that, it’s ultimately a killer. And there’s no cure. So Toby decides that she needs to petition the Queen of the Mists for help, even though the Queen despises her. She is shocked when the Queen proves to be the channel by which the goblin fruit has reached the realm outside Faerie. Worse, the Queen is so put out by Toby’s petition that she gives her three days to get her affairs in order before she is banished from the Kingdom of the Mists.
It’s a great wind-up for a plot that soon has Toby charging both within and without the Kingdom to discover how the Queen got her throne and whether she truly belongs upon it. In the process, she uses every connection she has formed in the prior seven books in the series to solve her problem. After visits to a number of locations, including a Library that sounds wonderful, and Borderlands, a San Francisco SF bookstore that actually exists in our world as well (and is also wonderful),* it appears that Toby is well on her way to having this case cleared up — until she gets hit with a complication so immense that one wonders if McGuire has finally given her character a problem she can’t solve.
And from there it gets worse.
McGuire writes with such urgency that it is difficult to cease reading Chimes at Midnight once you start. The plotting doesn’t apply just to this book; McGuire pulls on threads she has left hanging throughout her series to weave one big tapestry. As one character puts it, to mix my metaphors, Toby lives in a “stew of myths,” and every myth is called into play here. It is a masterful performance.
Don’t start the OCTOBER DAYE series here; you’ll be lost. Go back to Rosemary and Rue and read straight through all of them. You’ll want to do it at a frantic pace, so set aside some serious time. Enjoy!
