Frustratingly good, my heart ached for both Bo and Half Pint. Always trying to keep everyone else happy at their own expense. The interference of others never worked in their favor and caused so much heartache but gave them a chance to grow. Great story.Tags : Complicate Me: The Good Ol' Boys - Kindle edition by M. Complicate Me The Good Ol' Boys edition by M Robinson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I was addicted to this story from the very beginning. In fact, I actually binge read it. That's how good it is. I'm usually not into stories that have young love in them. I feel sometimes authors don't translate the angst of youth well on a page. BUT, this one was hit out of the park!!!! If you're looking for a true love story, something that will grab your attention, something that will take you on a true love story journey, this is the book for you!!! This author has a follower for life now!
Trust me, you won't regret it.
Wow. I felt every emotion with this story. I find myself hit or miss on stories that start out in the present, but then the story actually takes place in the past. BUT this story will suck you in and not let you go until you are a crying mess at the end. (In a good way, of course.) The author really does a great job with character development and matches the personality and tone to their ages. You understand where the characters are coming from and how things get misinterpreted. (And it doesn't tick you off like in other stories where you want to strangle the idiot characters.) I guarantee you've lived some of this story in your awkward youth. Great change of pace!
First let me say that I read "Forbid Me" before I read this book. I liked Forbid Me and we got to see a glimpse into Lucas and Alex's lives. I read the reviews and was on the fence but I figured that I liked Forbid Me and I got to see that Lucas and Alex got their HEA so I figured it would be an ok story...esp knowing they got an HEA. Well, sadly to say I was wrong. I think I loathed this book.
**SPOILERS**
My biggest problem was the fact that there were detailed sex scenes between the H and multiple other women. Seriously...I don't need to read about him IN DETAIL about being with someone besides the heroine. It was disgusting and I wish someone would have mentioned it in their reviews as I would have avoided the book all together.
My second biggest problem was Lucas. I didn't see him as any kind of Hero and I especially didn't see any real love from him to Alex. He claimed to love her but repeatedly hooked up with other women. Then when another male -who wasn't a part of the group - entered Alex's life he did everything he could to hurt her even more. It was clear how Alex felt for him but he couldn't keep it in his pants and commit to her...why? Oh b/c he loved her..yep, thats right...he loved her so he couldn't be with her. Makes complete sense!! Plus, not only did Alex have to witness him being with other women he had a child with one of them! Planned or not it was a huge slap in the face to Alex. Ultimately, the Good Ol' Boys were right...Lucas wasn't good enough for Alex.
I think Alex could have been a good character if she was stronger. Yes, she kinda moved on with her life after reaching her breaking point but she all to easily let him back into her life. For goodness sakes, she ends one engagement and end up in another one in just a few months time. Plus she just over looks all the pain he caused and she has to be reminded of it everyday when she looks at the son he fathered with another woman.
Ultimately, this book left me with a sick feeling in my stomach. I wish poetic justice would have been served and Alex would have ended up with Cole - however, after reviewing some of this authors other books she doesn't seem to place any sanctity on marriage (other books are blatantly about cheating husbands/wives) more than likely Alex and Lucas would have had an affair. I probably would have hated the characters more if that happened.
This book was amazing!! Oh,God the feelings it gives. I bawled my eyes out! Like I sent to M. this book broke my heart & put it back together several times. I couldn't put it down so make sure you have plenty of time to sit & read all in one sitting! I recommend not having kids or hubbies around, they will make you want to hurt them for interrupting you 😀 💖 Can't wait for more Good Ol' Boys!!
"Complicate Me" is the first book in M. Robinson's new series The Good Ol' Boys. While it is being categorized in the contemporary romance genre, it can also be deemed as a new adult, or a coming of age read.
"Complicate Me" is the story of Alexandra (Alex), and Lucas, two childhood friends with a adoration and love for each other that changes after they share an innocent first kiss. A friendship that was once playful and protective, becomes complicated as Lucas and Alex are not only dealing with their feelings for each other, but also the emotional, mental and physical pressures of maturing.
The story takes place in Oak Island, North Carolina, which is described as one of those small towns, where everyone in the community knows each other and are life long friends. The town is beautifully and vividly described right from the very beginning, so that you can feel the spirit of this small town and characters that reside in it. While the first book focuses on the relationship/characters Lucas and Alex (Half Pint and Bo), you get to meet the rest of the "good ol' boys" and get an idea of the close bond that they have with each other. They share a common role as protector to Alex, who is more like their baby sister, than their tag along, tomboyish friend. It truly is a beautiful introduction.
"Complicate Me" will give you "all the feels", as it is a very emotional read, full of angst. It's characters and their situations are relatable and speak to all of your emotions. You cannot help but to smile at the beauty and innocence of the friendship between Bo and Half Pint (Lucas and Alex's endearing nicknames for each other). They are adorable with their unfiltered declarations of love for each other. Because at that point in their lives, LOVE was just hanging out with their besties all day. One of my favorite moments is when Lucas asks Alex, if she likes him. She unequivocally, answers back, "No, I love you." It is all so sweet and innocent. As the story progressed, I had moments of aggravation towards Lucas, your typical guy, doing stupid things and most times unintentionally hurting Alex. My heart bled for Alex for having to see and feel all of that. I was truly invested in these characters.
In addition to that, there are other raw and tearful moments in "Complicate Me". All I can say, is the tears were flowing throughout the entire read. The next day, I was spent emotionally and physically, because I decided to read it, in one sitting.
All in all, "Complicate Me" is a crazy ride of emotions, THAT I ENJOYED!
If the first book in The Good Ol' Boys Series, is any indication of the remainder of series, it will be amazing, and I will be anxiously awaiting the second book.
Frustratingly good, my heart ached for both Bo and Half Pint. Always trying to keep everyone else happy at their own expense. The interference of others never worked in their favor and caused so much heartache but gave them a chance to grow. Great story.
